SEBI Investment Adviser (RIA) registration & NISM certification, explained

To register as a SEBI Investment Adviser (RIA) in India, the current regulations require the NISM-Series-X-A (Level 1) and NISM-Series-X-B (Level 2) certifications. At present, no non-NISM certification qualifies on its own. Here is what that means in practice — and where a wealth-management credential like the CWM® fits.

The certification requirement

Under the SEBI (Investment Advisers) Regulations, anyone seeking registration as an Investment Adviser must hold the NISM-Series-X-A and X-B certifications (and meet the qualification, net-worth and other conditions SEBI specifies). These NISM examinations are the base requirement; non-NISM certifications do not currently substitute for them.

Where the CWM® fits

The Chartered Wealth Manager (CWM®) was accredited under the 2013 regulations historically. Today its value is different but real: deep, practice-ready training in wealth management, portfolio strategy, taxation and estate planning, recognised in 151+ countries and actively recruited for by banks, AMCs and PMS firms. Many advisers pair a CWM® (for advisory depth) with the NISM X-A & X-B exams (for SEBI RIA eligibility).

Who needs to register

Broadly, individuals and firms that provide investment advice for consideration in India need to register as Investment Advisers with SEBI, subject to the regulations and applicable exemptions. Always confirm your specific obligations against the latest SEBI circulars or with a qualified professional.
