CWM® Certification — your questions answered
Common questions about the Chartered Wealth Manager® program — eligibility, pathways, examination, education providers and certification. For exact current fees, always check the Fee Structure page.
Chartered Wealth Manager® (CWM®) is an international certification in Wealth Management, Private Banking and Financial Advisory Services. It is a mark of excellence granted to individuals meeting the standards set by the American Academy of Financial Management® (AAFM®), and is among the most widely accepted wealth-management certifications, with over 50,000 designation holders globally.
The program suits professionals and graduates who want to advise High Net-Worth Individuals on managing, growing and transferring wealth — including financial-services professionals, wealth managers, relationship managers, insurance advisors, research analysts, and graduates pursuing careers in wealth management and financial advisory.
India's major banks, NBFCs, brokerages and financial-services firms run wealth-management divisions and face a significant shortage of qualified talent. Wealth management is one of the fastest-growing professions globally, offering broad opportunities across financial institutions.
Wealth managers advise on onshore and offshore wealth management, preservation, enhancement and transfer. The role typically offers relatively low stress, high earning potential, workplace autonomy and the satisfaction of helping clients achieve their financial goals.
For organisations: it develops employee skills, improves advice quality, demonstrates advisor credibility to clients and aligns to global standards. For individuals: it deepens technical knowledge, sharpens client-management skills, strengthens relationships and opens new career opportunities.
Wealth managers work as employed or self-employed professionals and are among the higher-paid roles in financial-services organisations, earning through a mix of transaction commissions and fee-based advice.
AAFM India — a professional standard-setting body established by AAFM® USA — offers CWM® Certification in India, functioning as the standard-setting and examination board for wealth management and related financial domains.
Yes. The course content blends Indian and international perspectives, and CWM® certificants can practise in their country of choice without additional cross-border registration or examination. Certificates are issued by the AAFM® International Board.
In India, Chartered Wealth Manager® has been accredited by the National Institute of Securities Markets (NISM) in the context of the SEBI (Investment Adviser) Regulations, 2013. Candidates completing the Compulsory Pathway (Level 1 + Level 2) qualify in the manner relevant to SEBI RIA requirements.
The curriculum spans two levels. Level 1 (Foundation) covers core wealth-management concepts through succession planning; Level 2 (Advanced) covers equity analysis through advanced wealth management. Candidates complete the units through Authorized Education Providers via classroom or distance learning.
Compulsory-Pathway candidates clear both Level 1 and Level 2 examinations; Experience-Pathway candidates clear Level 2. Both are objective (MCQ) examinations.
The Experience Pathway is for candidates with the required minimum relevant work experience, allowing direct entry to the Level 2 examination while still completing the prescribed training. See the Registration Pathway page for current eligibility.
Submit the registration form with a detailed resume describing your work experience and job profile, along with proof of relevant experience. Applications are processed through Authorized Education Providers — AAFM India does not accept direct registrations.
It develops three areas: Knowledge (current market dynamics and updates), Skills (building solutions and presenting strategies) and Application (preparing practitioners for real industry work).
AAFM India's Authorized Education Providers deliver the program through distance learning, e-learning, and part-time and full-time formats.
Study material and examinations are in English.
You may enrol after completing SSC / Class 12, but graduation is required for the award of the CWM® Certification and the right to use the CWM® marks.
Registration is through the Student Registration process on the AAFM India portal and via Authorized Education Providers. See the Registration Process page for the current steps.
Course fees comprise a registration / study-material fee, your Authorized Education Provider's tuition (which varies by provider and mode), and a certification fee. For the current, exact amounts please see the CWM® Fee Structure page.
